I'm a first year graduate student interested in mathematics education and the use of logic and proof to promote thorough conceptual understanding. I have a BS in mathematics from the University of Notre Dame, along with a minor in Irish Literature and Language. I first became interested in education as an undergraduate when I worked in a cognitive psychology lab studying children's misconceptions of the equal sign and its impact on algebra readiness. After graduating from Notre Dame, I did a year of service with a Pittsburgh based AmeriCorps program called Knowledge to Empower Youth to Success (KEYS). As a KEYS member I served as a math teaching assistant in middle and high school classrooms at a local urban charter school. Spending time in the classroom has increased my desire to research the effects of logical discussions and proofs on students' abilities to learn content and demonstrate their knowledge.
